Troubleshooting CWT
Targeting world-wide web access and minimizing end-user troubles, the CACTUS Web Training applications are designed with a strong consideration for common web protocols and specifications. However, in order to maintain the performance requirements associated with complex tasks (e.g. controlling multimedia content), the CACTUS Web Training modules have specific minimum system requirements for desirable reliability and functionality.
System Requirements
The system requirements of CACTUS Web Training are:
• MS Internet Explorer 6.0+ browser (application of latest service packs and patches recommended)
Note: MSN Explorer and AOL Web Browser are also welcome, provided that IE 6.0+ is present.
• MS Media Player 7.1+ (9.0+ recommended)
• 200 MHz CPU (400+ MHz recommended)
• 64 MB RAM (128+ MB recommended)
• 800x600 High Color display (1027x768 True Color recommended)
Browser Settings
MS Internet Explorer provides a very sophisticated customization of the client's behavior; see the dialog box under Tools / Internet Options. These settings seriously affects the availability of browser functions utilizied by CACTUS Web Training.
Fortunately, the MS Internet Explorer default settings and the implementation of "Security level" templates under Tools / Internet Options / Security enables safe browser customization without the need of a deep technical knowledge.
♦ Security Options
The CACTUS Web Training system performs appropriately, when set to the "Medium" security level for the Internet zone under Tools / Internet Options / Security. This is the default setting for this zone: you get Medium if you click "Default Level" button in this page.
Note that CWT does not work with the "High" security level.
♦ Pop-up Blocking
If your browser implements "pop-up blocking", e.g. after installing MS Windows XP SP2, then you should enable pop-ups for the CACTUS Web Training web site, before executing on-line training materials.
For example, under XP SP2, you can do this in the Tools / Pop-up Blocker / Pop-up Blocker Settings dialog box.
Note that it is not required to turn-off the pop-up blocker entirely. It is enough to allow pop-ups only for the CWT site.
♦ User Experience
Altough the applications remain functional, certain settings ultimately affects the user experience with respect to the outline and the image rendering of the CACTUS Web Training pages.
We recommend using the default settings under Tools / Internet Options / Advanced. You can get the default settings by clicking the "Restore Defaults" button in this page.
If, for some reason, you do not want to use the default settings, then at a minimum enabling the followings are recommended:
• "Browsing" group:
- "Enable page transitions"
- "Enable visual styles on buttons and controls in web pages"
- "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts"
• "Multimedia" group:
- All options except "Enable Image Toolbar" and "Show image download placeholders"
Moreover, under XP SP2, it is recommended to enable the "Allow script-initiated windows without size or position constraints" option. You can do this as follows:
1. Open the Tools / Internet Options dialog and go to the Security page.
2. Click the "Custom Level" button.
3. Find the "Allow script-initiated windows without size or position constraints" option in the "Miscellaneous" option group.
4. Tick "Enable" for this option.
5. Click "OK" and then "Apply" in the underlying window.
Note that after this setting, "Custom" security level shall be displayed instead of "Medium".
